# How to turn on auto-translation

This guide shows you how to read guest messages in your own language and send your replies in the language of the guest.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Before you start**

* You have access to the inbox.
  {% endhint %}

## Choose your inbox language

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open your profile

Go to **Settings** → **Profile** → **General**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose the language

In **Preferred Inbox Language**, choose the language you want to read guest messages in, and click **Update**.

Each team member sets their own inbox language.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Turn on translation

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open a conversation

In the inbox, open a conversation with a guest who writes in another language. The messages show in your inbox language. **Toggle translations on/off** in the header switches between the translation and the original.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Translate your replies

In the reply form, click the translation button (**Auto-translate outgoing messages**) and switch it on, so it reads **Auto-translating is on**. Keep **Guest Language** in **Translating to:**, so the reply goes out in the language of the guest.

Click **Preview translation** to check the text before you send it. Auto-translate does not work for WhatsApp templates.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.guestway.io/guestway_onboarding/how-to-turn-on-auto-translation.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
