# How to set up your guest journey

This guide shows you how to set up the online check-in that guests complete in the guest portal, with protection and a first upsell.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Before you start**

* You have permission to edit guest journeys and upsells.
* An active Stripe account is the default. See [How to connect Stripe for guest payments](/guestway_onboarding/how-to-connect-stripe-for-guest-payments.md).
* For protection: a default branding with a company name and contact email. See [How to set up your branding](/guestway_onboarding/how-to-set-up-your-branding.md).
  {% endhint %}

## Choose the steps

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the journey

Go to **Settings** → **Organization** → **Guest Journey** and open the journey. Check that it applies to your listings and multi-units.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Turn on the steps you need

The journey has three phases: **Pre-check-in**, **Check-in** and **Check-out**. Before arrival, guests go through **Guest Information**, **Trip Details**, **Agreement**, **Protection**, **Upsells**, **Fees** and **ID Verification**, in this order. Turn on the steps you need, and save the journey.

{% hint style="success" %}
Keep the journey as short as you can. Guests finish a short check-in more often.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Set up protection

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Turn on the protection step

Select the **Protection** step and turn it on. Expand the readiness alert at the top, and for each missing item click **Fix**, then **Re-check**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set up the damage waiver

Tick the **Damage Waiver** card and turn on **Charge to guest**. Choose a **Pricing type**, enter the **Amount**, and edit the **Guest-facing description**. Under **Damage waiver type**, choose **Full protection**, **Basic protection** or **Self Insured**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set up the security deposit, if you want one

Tick the **Security Deposit** card. Choose a **Pricing type**, enter the **Amount**, edit the **Guest-facing description**, and choose the **Charge method**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save the journey

Save the journey. The protection step is live.

{% hint style="success" %}
Try a new protection setup first on a duplicate of the journey, linked to a single property.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Add your first upsell

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Create an early check-in

In the **Upsells** step of the journey, click **Create a new upsell**. On **What would you like to add?**, click **Early check-in**. Fill in the **Internal name** and the **Guest-facing name**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set the times and prices

Select the properties. Under **Pricing** → **Available times**, click **Add time range**, drag the range to the times you offer, and type the price of each range.

{% hint style="success" %}
Give the earliest time range the highest price.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Turn it on

Turn on **Enabled**. If your team must approve each request, turn on **Needs approval**. Fix each item of the readiness alert until it shows **Upsell setup ready**, and click **Create**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.guestway.io/guestway_onboarding/how-to-set-up-your-guest-journey.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
