# How to set up your first automations

This guide shows you how to create a first automation that sends guests the right message at the right time.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Before you start**

* You have permission to edit automations.
* To message guests on WhatsApp, your WhatsApp templates are approved.
  {% endhint %}

## Pick a schedule

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Create the automation

Go to **Settings** → **Organization** → **Automations**, and click **Create**. Give the automation a clear name, for example *Pre & Post-Stay Guest Messaging*. It applies to **All properties**, and it starts as **Draft**, so nothing is sent yet.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Add a schedule

Click **Add Schedule** and name it. Keep **Any length of stay** and **Any advance notice** on, so it runs for all reservations.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Add the first messages

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Choose when it fires

Open the schedule and click **Add Action**. Choose the anchor, **Booking Confirmation**, **Check-in**, **Check-out** or **Event**, and the timing, for example *3 days before check-in at 10:00 AM*.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Write the message

Choose **Guest Message** and write the text. Use template variables, for example `{{guest.first_name}}`, so each message is personal.

Good first messages are the check-in instructions before arrival, the arrival details on the day, and a review request after check-out.

If the message uses a smart lock code, accept the waiting condition that Guestway suggests, so the message waits until the code exists.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Test it

Save the automation. Turn on **Enabled** and **Testing Mode**: the automation runs, but nothing is delivered. Check the result on a few real reservations.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Go live

When the result is right, turn off **Testing Mode**. The badge changes to **Live**, and messages go out.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.guestway.io/guestway_onboarding/how-to-set-up-your-first-automations.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
